Are you homeschooling a high schooler who wants to go to college?

Does going through the college entrance process with your homeschooled teen give you pause?

Do you wonder how colleges look at their homeschool applicants?

Or whether the colleges accept all of their homeschool high school credits?

I was so anxious about the college admissions process as a homeschooler when I began helping our teen.

But I needn't have been.  But we as homeschoolers often worry.....

- How should I make my teen's homeschool transcript?

- Or do we need an accredited transcript?

- Are there extra hoops to jump through for homeschoolers?

My mission is to encourage other homeschooling families who are homeschooling high school, for college bound teens or for those who are headed into community college, an apprenticeships or a vocation.

Many of the colleges are now even looking for homeschooled applicants.

Since everyone needs a transcript, let's start with that.

Homeschool Transcripts

We do not need to have accredited transcripts to get our teens into college.  We didn't have one and our teen got into each college on her list.

My best tips for that are below, with guidance for doing them in the way that the colleges are used to seeing.  This is from a chapter in my book.

What do the colleges require of homeschool applicants?

Homeschooled College Applicants

Each college will have a list of their Freshman Entrance Requirements on their website.  These are the courses that each applicant must complete to apply to that college.

It is important to check with the likely colleges for your teen, to guide you in your high school planning.

These requirements are similar, but are not always the same.  The harder colleges ask for AP courses, SAT Subject Tests,  and that sort of thing.  If they do ask for these things, they will be listed on their websites.

But most colleges do not require these things.

But do colleges ask for extra requirements for their homeschooled applicants?

Well, some do.

Some colleges ask for extra testing from their homeschoolers.  But most don't.  Two of my daughter's colleges did ask for extra testing for her for Spanish.  However, the year after she applied, they dropped those extra requirements.

The best thing to do about that is just to ask college admissions.  But the trend is away from that.  Most colleges treat homeschoolers just the same as they do public school applicants.
